About The Artwork

Mother Nature is my muse. I’m inspired by natural surroundings in Upstate New York and the Bronx. I’m an interpreter. I take off from an observation or memory and paint the sensation. My intention is to capture an emotional quality not literalness. This is the inspiration for the painting 'Cadmium Landscape.' My oil paintings are a combo---brushwork, drawing, drips, scrapping, spattering, rubbing, finger painting. I paint on canvas and gessoed paper. My inspiring influences are Joan Mitchell for her color and assimilation of nature. A jumping-off point is my road in Upstate New York. Visions of trees, ponds, the Hudson River, mountains, pasture and wild and cultivated gardens are stored in my imagination. Changes in mood are evoked by time, light and weather. I also live on the Hudson in the Bronx. The beauty of the weather and the seasons on the River and the New Jersey Palisades is staggering. The Bronx is 25% parkland. I look in Wave Hill, the New York Botanical Gardens, VanCortlandt Park and the Riverdale wild parks. Often after a walk I can’t wait to go to my studio and paint the experience. I want a visceral take on nature. My eyes crave texture and energy. My soul wants color. I like to see the mark of my hand on the image. Gestures make the surface come alive. 'Cadmium Landscape' is signed GHF.

I live and work in Dutchess County/the Hudson Valley/Upstate New York. Here I cannot escape--the landscape. This natural environment has deep connections for me: rivers, ponds, mountains, trails, wetlands, farmland, forests. I look for underlying geometry and order amid nature's chaos. I paint an imagined reality from a perceived experience. With charcoal, graphite and oil sticks while layering oils, I interpret through memory, imagination and atmospheric encounters with nature. Draw/erase. Paint/scrape. A ghost remains. With these traces I move the work toward the bilateral link between what I can see and what I can imagine. I translate both surface and subterranean geography to canvas and paper. The macrocosm and microcosm belong together. This combination casts the familiar in a new light.
