About The Artwork

Caer Sidhe is Gaelic/ Celtic for “Castle of the Sidhe”. For me a subject of persistent visionary experience over many years is a kind of high hilltop/mountain top shimmering castle, never quite defined, mysterious; not quite in this world; a gate from this world to the next. The idea comes mainly from Celtic sources, where the Sidhe are quite different from how they appear as “Fairies” in children’s tales; as large as humans, alien, unpredictable, startlingly beautiful, magically powerful. Many places in Britain are said to be such gateways to the next world…in stories of Irish early history the Sidhe are a supernatural race in Irish mythology comparable to the fairies or elves. They are said to live underground in the fairy mounds, across the western sea, or in an invisible world that coexists with the world of humans. This world is described in the Book of Invasions (recorded in the Book of Leinster) as a parallel universe in which the Sidhe walk amongst the living. They are said to be the ancestors, spirits of nature, or goddesses and gods. In many Gaelic tales the Sidhe are later, literary versions of the Tuatha Dé Danann (“People of the Goddess Danu”). The Painting strngely was painted a week or so before going to 'Butterfly Valley' in Southern Turkey, the landscape and light of which it matches exactly.

A fallible human being, like you all. People think that Sufism promotes an idea of transformation into a kind of "Superman/ woman", as "Insan-i Kamil", "The Perfect Human". But this is a conceit of Western misunderstanding - it means to be a real human being, and we are not looking to a Super-Being at the end of the Path; there is no end, nor a static perfection envisaged.
