About The Artwork

Cassius was a prominent Roman who when he lost his wife and children didn't cry at the funeral, but when his pet lamprey died he wept. This myth or perhaps truth long distorted by re-telling is none the less an interesting take on our relationship with animals. Cassius in my painting has become a torso carved from stone whilst the animal has been rendered more naturalistically. This effects the amount of time that many animals have been around almost unchanged compared to our fast rise to power through rapid evolution, and the egotistical way we see ourselves as the centre of things. Painted on a stretcher gifted to me by another artist who has greatly influenced me, Jesse leroy Smith. It is made of cloth stretched over a solid ply deep box frame. No glass is involved in the frame, and it's deepness makes it more object than painting.
