Castle Haze - frame original watercolour Painting

I was lucky enough to have the most inspiring view from my former studio in Newhaven, Edinburgh, of which this is just a part. This painting marked the beginning of a renewed approach to my work, having taken the time to study how artists like David Curtis and Joseph Zbukvic work, where I would try and bring a greater sophistication and more natural character to what I was doing. First time out can go two ways for me, complete failure, or most pure attempt. This time it was purity and what was to follow, although perhaps more accomplished, was never quite as free as this. It's all too easy to get precious and bogged down in watercolour. In this painting I tried to free my mind and not fuss or become attached to things and began to feel like an observer more than a painter, not guiding so much as knowing when it was time to accept what was there and move on. As a result I quickly developed the belief in myself to show the light in a scene. This came from looking and deciding which elements gave the scene its lighting character and choosing the best way to represent that on the page. Ultimately it wasn't about colours, but the palette I ended up with here has a certain quality reminiscent of the colours one sees after looking for a long time into bright conditions. The painting was done on 300gsm Saunders Bockingford reverse side rough paper and the overall frame size is 43.2 x43.1 x 3.2cm.
