About The Artwork

This painting is one of a series entitled "Concerning Being". My subjects of focus are the subtleties that sit between the obvious, noted as I move through experience in life. I decided to have some fun with shape, while using black ink, white and red natural pigment. The natural color of the linen works as a grounding reference. The red dot as a tension or surprise, a punctuation. I hope that my paintings will draw the viewer in, and allow the viewer time to ponder and consider. Hope the viewer finds the work to be of a meditative nature. The painting consists of natural pigments on linen. I was drawn to this medium as it has an ethereal quality and the ability to layer very well, revealing under layers, when one wishes.

A childhood spent in Mid Wales instilled a love of landscape and, awe for the power and fluctuations of the elements. As a traveler of both land and sea, I draw on these experiences in my work. Life experience and concerns with being and spirit are reflected in my work. Major components of my work are issues of impermanence, shifting perspectives, displacement and loss, aligned with the dichotomy of hope, that which drives us on. My inspiration stems from the landscape in which I find myself, be it referential to color, form, or a line seen in space. My interests are to be found in the subtle undercurrents, the not so blatant, crude or obvious, in other words, a case of paying attention to what happens between the obvious. While involved in my painting, which involves much layering, I am considering what to bury and what to reveal. Initially, I work in an investigative manner, using my drawing in the landscape or urban environment as a jumping off point. Drawings made in the landscape serve as meditations and find their way into my paintings where they act as metaphors for a deeper meaning. After working in London as a freelance illustrator for a few years, I then made the move to the USA where I have continued to develop my fine art work. I have a record of exhibition in states such as SC, NC, FL, NM, AZ, and OK. A few exhibits to mention are, “Abstract Art in SC, 1949-2012”, State Museum, Columbia, SC, in 2012. “30th Parallel- a Convergence of Contemporary Painting”, 2005, JMOMA, Jacksonville, FL “CYMK”, 2005, Trans America Pyramid, San Francisco, CA. “80 x 80”, the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC, 2016. I have been a recipient of art residencies at The Sedona Arts Colony, AZ The Lucid Art Foundation, Inverness, CA, the Beaufort Arts Council, and the Spring Island Trust. Awards include the SC Coastal Conservation League.
