About The Artwork

I'm a regular chess player and tutor, and the subject matter of this game has always fascinated me. The idea of "Chesskulls" landed when I was designing a book cover illustration. The queen is the most powerful piece on the board, and you don't want to mess with her. It is believed Chess was invented in India around 550 AD. However, China has a strong claim for the invention of chess. Chinese chess, also called xiangqi or elephant chess is an ancient game, and its similarities with western chess are notable (A World of Chess, by Jean-Louis Cazaux with Rick Knowlton is an eye-opener and worth reading).
