About The Artwork
'Child With Golden Hair' by Artist CMA Ryan is a truly stunning oil paint portrait created in 2022. The artists expert use of an illuminating colour palette and subtle chiaroscuro effect creates a familiarity between the subject and viewer. The oil paint application is carefully considered to give the child both an air of innocence yet also a playfulness we all can relate to. An overlay of bright, angelic highlights have been exquisitely applied to bring the piece to its conclusion. The subject of this portrait is an unknown young child; mostly likely from Western Europe and was taken from an antique black and white photograph (c.1930) owned by the artist. This happy youngster was painstakingly studied, drafted and successfully revived in marvellous oil colour for all to enjoy. This piece was painted on gesso board and cradled on the reverse by a wooden frame. It has been sealed and protected with high quality artist grade varnish and is ready to be framed for display. Intuitive studies in charcoal and graphite lead on to rendering in oil paint, in which vibrant, broken colours and contrasting textures are modified and inscribed. This layered process arrives at a unified and naturalistic representation, with a vibrancy that comes from within. The artist draws on the rich tradition of portraiture, with particular inspiration taken from the Flemish masters and the Expressionists of the early 20th century.
