About The Artwork

The most irreplaceable ecosystem on the planet, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, was inhabited for over a thousand years by a civilization of master goldsmiths that resisted the Spanish invasion for 100 years: the Tairona people. In 1498 the first Spaniards arrived in la Sierra in search of gold. At that time, the mountain range was densely populated and its center was Teyuna: a capital city with hundreds of houses, stone roads, stairways, cultivation terraces, plazas, ceremonial areas and a network of canals. This city was built more than 1300 years ago, 650 years before the famous Machu Picchu, and was abandoned in the 1600s. The jungle swallowed this city for 400 years, until 1975 when local guaqueros began looting the tombs of the ancient metropolis looking for buried treasures. A team of archaeologists then visited the site which they named "Lost City", although to the indigenous peoples of the Sierra it was never lost. After years of restoration, it opened as Ciudad Perdida-Teyuna Archaeological Park.

I am a Colombian artist living in Barcelona. Through art I have been able to connect with the landscapes and culture of my ancestors. I re-imagine Latin American art through historical figures, legends, landscapes and symbology inspired by the iconography of pre-Hispanic goldsmith masters. I am inspired by the revival of historical memory, the wisdom of indigenous cosmovisions and nature. My work frequently transforms landscapes into relief engravings with metallic colors that represent the mineral richness of the earth. For the last four years I have been managing Casa Jaguar /@casajaguar.studio/, an art studio in Barcelona where I collaborate with other Colombian audiovisual artists with whom I share my interest in developing a visual language that integrates pre-Hispanic art with contemporary art.
