About The Artwork

This work is part of the series "reflections on the passing of time" where the painter paints the vehicles in the manner of the Vanities of old that is to say, representing the wear and tear of time, rust, holes, decay. In Germany, the country of origin, the Volkswagen Combi is best known as the "bulldog", colloquially "Bulli", for the resemblance of the front end of the first generations. Initially a pure utility vehicle in a post-war world lacking in means of transport, it was also manufactured in minibus and camper versions. It is thus the precursor of the motor homes. Nowadays, this vehicle is experiencing a great revival of interest, becoming a real fashion phenomenon. It is among the most representative symbols of the 1960s and 1970s (especially of the hippie period) and is synonymous with adventure, backpackers, marginality and more generally with freedom or cool attitude.

Born in Courrières in the North of France, I share my time between the North of France and Paris which inspires me many urban scenes including café terraces. I have always used oil paint because slow drying suits my technique better. I work in series by inspiring my surrounding, places I go to, objects I own and stage. In the series "Réflexions sur le temps qui passe", I treat the cars and Vespa in the manner of the "vanities" of the past by perforating the bodies, rusting them, thus translating the time that passes and which reduces to few things once prestigious vehicles. The parallel is obvious with our own existence. In the still lifes séries, I stage objects with a preference for metal and glass and using a palette of coloured grey and nuanced white so as to have a contemporary touch. In the series "Mes petites Nanas", I interpret scenes, situations, by putting in scene my daughter who is used to me as model (The comedy of the feelings, or the works on the small girls). Finally, the urban landscapes are inspired, as I said earlier, by my numerous stays in Paris where I live part of the year.
