About The Artwork

Subject: The New Cathedral, Cuenca, Ecuador Description: This work is a depiction of the column capitals flanking the entry of the New Cathedral in Cuenca Ecuador. Rather than being carved from a single piece of stone, like most column capitals, these are pieced together from individual pressed brick elements formed and fired on site by craftsmen. The brick ornamentation features a mix of local flora, adaptations of Cañari and Incan symbols and Catholic iconography. One of the most prominent elements are the roses at the center of each capital. Roses are both one of Ecuador's most important exports and a traditional representation of the Virgin Mary. Additionally the Cathedral borders a large open-air flower market that is central to the local community. I was struck by how the capitals are a compilation of culturally relevant though disparate elements coming together to create a harmonious whole - appropriate for an imposing Catholic Cathedral while also telling a story of the people and place. This work is one of several works that represent different aspects of the New Cathedral complete with the intention that they can be paired up for display as a diptych or triptych. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
