About The Artwork

This inspiration for this painting came to me when I was creating my Codes collages. I was playing around with complementary colors and the contrast between them when placed next to each other. As much fun as this was, I found it challenging to put green and red together without being reminded of Christmas time. This quickly became my least favorite complementary color combination but I found it interesting that this connection to a holiday overpowered a work of art, unrelated to any holiday, that uses these two colors in it. The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year but I wanted to study these colors more closely. So I decided to start a series of small paintings using only green and red in a way that doesn't remind the viewer of Christmas time. This was very fun and challenging and I hope the viewers initial thought is an abstract painting versus a Christmas painting. I enjoy creating work with a challenge being the motivator. They slowly turned into abstract landscapes, which connects in many ways to my previous works. Please feel free to comment your thoughts on this painting, I would love to know what your initial thought was before reading the statement.

Art is a means of exploration and experimentation for me. Art is my passion as well as art education and I am thankful that I am able to pursue both by working as a high school art teacher and an artist. I enjoy working with a wide variety of color, texture, and transparencies to create expressive landscapes. Nature has always been my number one inspiration and motive when creating. My color choices are vibrant and diverse, creating the abstraction and imagination in the paintings. As an art teacher, I am able to see my students ideas and stories in the classroom. Their ideas inspire me everyday and bring me so much happiness. It is so fun and motivating to see their creativity. For three years, I worked as an artist assistant for a well known St. Louis artist. I was able to learn so much from the studio and always left inspired by her artwork.
