The subject of the Connected series is the issue of social displacement in a fast paced urban environment.

The competing positive and the negative impacts on an individual living in a modern city.

Being raised in a small(ish) town, the artist reflects on changes she had experienced moving into the mega cities as a young adult. Most of us undergo a social adjustment joining the race (for money, fame, lifestyle, fashion, career or simply breath the city buzz) ultimately falling into faster pace of life.

The price to pay is parting with one's identity (hence blanc paper plane) in order to fit in, feel accepted by the system and follow (or reverse - some paper planes go against the main flow) the crowd.

Depending on their vice, we form smaller flocks growing ties and amassing new followers.

Hence the series name - "connected " which is also referencing the notion of digital over compensation for our solitude within the crowd.

On the positive side, the artist draws parallels between the paper plane as manmade creation, perfectly shaped to fly with little support, and modern young person. Admiring courage, determination despite at times obvious immaturity and lack of responsibility often criticised as purposeless existence much like the existence of a paper plane.

Yuliya artistic talents started to forge from a really early age as she spent hours in the after school classes experimenting with media and receiving classical art training. She grew up between the leafy hills and lakes of Northern Kazakhstan and industrial Caspian coast town where she was born in 1980. In turbulent times of post Soviet collapse her future her family made a decision that law studies were more worthy to pursue so artistic development had to be posed. Yuliya was able to return to art looking for meaningful engagement after having spent 15 years in corporate world of energy and banking. Since 2015, Yuliya has been well received exhibitor with independent and gallery represented art fairs in London and nationwide. Her work is well sold on all the major online platforms and found its way to movie sets (Marvel for Doctor Strange 2016, ABC for Scandal, 2017), have been shown in members clubs, stylish London hotels and fine dining venues, acquired by interior designers for yachts, cruise liner, international resorts and held in private collections world wide. Yuliya is known for developing collections filled with elegant flow and ethereal glow. She explores idea of fragility and strength in her sky scapes, isolation at sea in dreamy sail boats coastal series, urban crowd dynamics in Connected works on paper and most recently cyclical nature of florals in her 2024 Blossom collection. With each of them focusing on delivering a dreamy side of an elemental realm, the body of works at large filled with weight free emotion effortlessly filling the viewer with light nostalgia. fall involve with me on instagram: @y_martynova_ where i show my life, my work, my beautiful house, daughter and occasionally a hiding hubby
