I envisioned this painting as an interpretation of the art historical motif of the last judgment. My goal was to capture the dizzying, violent motion of catastrophe while allowing the viewer to impart their own myriad meanings upon the forms. The title is borrowed from Walt Whitman, a poet whose vision of the apocalypse has no sense of finality. Death and life are merged in that we always have been and always will be a part of both worlds: “All goes onward and outward and nothing collapses, and to die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier.”
