Cosmic girl Painting

At first sight, the observer sees a static portrait of a person in a strange garment. The figure is located in an indistinctive space, with floating details in the background. This composition creates an image of a future human. However, the title helps to unlock deeper meanings of the artwork. In the second half of the nineties a British band “Jamiroquai” released an album called “Travelling Without Moving”, featuring their hit song “Cosmic Girl”. The combination of both the album and the song titles led me to thinking about how contemporary people travel less by moving in space because they have their representative images “traveling” for them on the internet instead. With the static figure I portray a body which is being restrained, yet by eliminating the space, I reveal how many endless possibilities we grant to ourselves. By means of current technology we are able to simultaneously be at two different places of the world, e.g., video phone calls allow us to observe the place in real time and to communicate with people, who physically are very far away. Therefore, the internet is a metaphor for the universe, and we are cosmic people.
