About The Artwork

This piece is one of my first finished works done with a technique using oil over an enamel-primed glossy vinyl support. The composition plays heavily on the dark matter of the black vinyl "void", with the scene fracturing from its original picture plane. My reference was photo taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is a continuation of my interest in the disintegration of the image and glitch aesthetics.

While exploring the interrupted image and fragmented figuration, these works are intended to capture the the anxiety and instability of our time, while employing a disintegrating and glitching pictorial plane that taps digital tendencies. " In his painting practice Harley Smart reflects an interest in the changing nature of the image in these digital times. Recently forcing "˜profile pic' portrait work into glitched, "˜fucked up figuration', while also mingling sensors, data projectors and his paintings to challenge traditional viewer interaction with the painted support, he has set himself up in the new camp of post-digital painting." ? Eric Simon, "˜Painting and Digital', 2009, Anteism Publishing.
