About The Artwork

In a vibrant African community, a young woman named Akua stood as a passionate advocate for the preservation of every girl's natural hair. With her radiant smile and luscious coils cascading down her back, Akua became a living embodiment of her message: that a girl's hair was her pride and her glory, a symbol of heritage and identity that deserved to be celebrated. Akua's journey as an advocate began with her own decision to embrace her beautiful, natural hair. As she let her curls flourish, she noticed the impact they had on those around her. Her confidence and pride in her roots inspired young girls who had been conditioned to believe that their hair needed to be altered to conform to societal norms. With unwavering determination, Akua began to share her message through empowering scripts and heartfelt speeches. She passionately spoke about the importance of self-love, cultural pride, and embracing one's natural beauty. Akua encouraged girls to break free from the confines of societal expectations and to cherish their unique identity. In the face of challenges and resistance, Akua persisted, undeterred. She organized community gatherings and workshops, creating safe spaces for girls to express themselves and feel empowered by their natural hair. Through her advocacy, she sought to change the narrative, urging parents, elders, and young girls to recognize the significance of preserving their crowning glory. Despite her best efforts, Akua realized that changing long-held traditions would not happen overnight. Some in the community were hesitant to embrace this shift, clinging to the familiar practices they had known for generations.

My name is Samuel Oseigyei Kumah. I was born on the 10th of September, 1988. I come from Ketekra-chi in the Oti region but lived and grew in Nima located in Greater Accra. I had both my elementary and junior high education at 37 Military basic school. I got enrolled in Ghanatta college of Arts and Design where I polished my talent as an artist. I discovered my talent at age 8 while in the elementary school but my parents especially my mother disagreed with me choosing to become an artist because she felt it was not a well paying profession. But with grandmother behind me, I managed to pursue it. I worked as an apprentice under three different masters in quest for skills and experience to be able to fit in the job market. In 2012, I started working as a full time versatile artist with the name Big Sam Arts. Due to how beautiful and quality my works are, I have been able to receive certificates and awards both internationally and locally. I am an artist who uses the color blue in my paintings of human figures to bridge the gap between different skin tones. I believe that the color blue is a universal color that can represent all people, regardless of their race or ethnicity. By choosing to paint my figures in blue, I am creating a visual representation of unity and harmony. I hope that my work can help to promote a more inclusive and accepting society. My artworks also aim to solve problems worldwide which includes love, sadness, happiness and preach peace. I am inspired by the challenges that people face around the world, and I want my work to be a force for positive change. I believe that art can be used to raise awareness of important issues, and I hope that my work can help to make a difference in the world. I am also committed to disregarding racism and encouraging oneness. I believe that we are all human beings, and we should treat each other with respect and compassion. I hope that my work can help to create a more just and equitable world.
