Cyril de Dos 01 Painting

Cyril is a life model with an amazing array of tattoos which made for a very unique session. In my bio I state, "I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model". With that in mind, it was interesting to approach this piece in a way that captures both the pose & the 'essence of the model', the latter undoutedly being the artwork on his body, with which we can discern, even from behind, that this is Cyril. I approached the tattoos in the same way I would a gesture drawing - trying to be fast yet accurate, & loose enough that it still felt organic & not bogged down in detail. There are no shadows in this piece so as to clearly differentiate the tones of the tattoos, creating appeal through the contrast & size of those tones. Whereas normally shadows would have helped define the volume of the anatomy, the tattoos were used to indicate volume, using the linework and perspective to wrap around forms. The pose itself is strong - we feel tension flowing through the arms, the left tugging on the right, causing a large stretch through the right side of the torso whilst also creating a very graphic silhouette. The piece is done with black gouache on brown, textured craft paper. I used the freshly applied gouache for the intial mark making and darker tones and then would add the lighter tones with a dry brush effect once most of the paint had come away from the brush. I would then repeat the process, intertwining and working the different tones simultaneously. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings.
