Painting, Enamel on Wood
Size: 32 W x 35 H x 1.2 D in
Ships in a Crate
D-Squared (1991) enamel and ink on gouged plywood 34.5” x 32” D-Squared started as a non-euclidean curvilinear design gouged into parallel lines on a 2D plywood square. The first stage of painting was followed by cutting off both ends of the square following along the curved lines resulting in it's deconstruction as a form. The two curved end pieces were matched up and glued together forming an euclidean rectangle. The rectangle was connected to the remaining curved piece at the top and from behind at separate levels and with space showing. The three curved pieces form a unique shape including four non-euclidean corners, four 90 degree corners and with one longer side than the original 32” square. This artwork is a Postmodern Deconstructivist idea.

Those ideas persuaded me to attend the University of Victoria where I earned my BFA (Hons) by 1992. The target was to develop a symbolic metalanguage to facilitate deconstructive events while perusing the ideas of painting in Western art history. I have expressed myself conceptually through gouged plywood painting, encaustic painting, kinetic painting, glitter painting, nano painting and pure substrateless painting in a style I think of as reductive but thoughtful.
