About The Artwork

I’m currently considering the informal approach to abstraction and the activity of making as mutable processes in relation to environmental space. This recent painting shows an interplay between intervention and accident through a process where paint is dripped, poured and splattered; the canvas folded to create reflected Rorschach-like swells, large areas subject to colourful washes and painterly gestures. The unexpected shapes and textures resulting from this way of working create a seemingly chaotic painted surface held in place by the limitations of the canvas plane itself. They are anomalous landscapes, fractured yet filled with energy. .

My work is an investigation into the meaning of landscape. Although I primarily choose to paint I'm less a traditional painter, more a curious one looking for ways to use paint and the language of abstraction to discover things hard to grasp and hard to define. I think of paintings as objects manifested from different landscape as a region of space neither here nor there, internal and external, at once close and yet far away. An environment is a region that makes up both our internal space and external space: mutable landscapes with indivisible boundaries exerting invisible influences as our connection to nature. I work with a mixture of materials - oils, acrylics, photography, 3d rendering software - that all contribute to an ongoing process to understand how they might relate to one another. Most recently I've been digitally combining landscape photography and sculptural interventions with old photographs to highlight a separation between these two spaces. What emerges moves between the past and present, and I hope that the work triggers a conversation about our connection to landscape.
