The heroic moment when Socrates embraced death is the central theme of this painting. Socrates is one of the founders of Western Philosophy, he chose death for his principles and refused the offer of exile and opportunity to escape from prison .With artistic freedom, the imposing figure of Socrates is shown larger than the rest of the people present in the prison cell as Socrates poignantly gazes straight at the observer drawing the viewer in to the scene. The centre of the painting is the iconic right hand of Socrates hovering over the cup of Hemlock which he is about to drink and embrace death. The facial expression and left hand gesturing to his disciples, family and the world at large that there is nothing to be feared in death. The bright coloured robe contrasts sharply with grave sadness of the scene but perfectly matches the defiant gesture and body language of Socrates who is ready to embrace death with grace, calm and dignity. There are two more simplified figures of Plato, in blue robe and wife of Socrates,Xanthipie , almost dehumanized with grief. The painting is inspired by Jacques-Louis David founder of neoclassical art movement and one of my favourite painters. I have borrowed both from Neoclassicism and abstract movements and this painting is a fusion of both these genres. The painting is on high quality triple primed box canvas on a sturdy frame and ready to hang and can be shipped anywhere in the world .
