About The Artwork

This painting is one in a series called ‘Unfolding Future’, in which I was exploring, amongst other things, the ideas of trust and guilt. I was looking at how our future is unfolding even though we don't see it like that at the time, it's only looking back that we can see the journey we've been on. In my work generally I use a variety of different elements and put them together in a way that says something positive, expresses a positive energy into the world. So with this series I began with an I Ching hexagram ‘Work on what has been spoiled’ and decided to start with photographs of my children when they were little. I was exploring the guilt about leaving my children when they were little and I went to art school, I went to college at Byam Shaw School of Art in London many moons ago. I had 2 young children when I began and had my third child, taking a year out half way through the course. I also felt guilty about not giving my artist-self the support and encouragement I needed to be a serious artist. The trust I developed and expressed in my work kept me going. In this painting I had a photo of my two older children. I loved the way they were so together, my daughter looks fed up about something so it fitted with the emotional aspect of my exploration. I wanted to keep the figures prominent, I have been playing around with where to draw the line between abstract and figurative, a recurring theme in my work. In this painting I wanted the figures to be strong to match the bold red colour.

I was born and grew up in London. Apart from living in Berlin for 2 years I have lived in London most of my life. I still live there although I now spend a lot of my time in France where I paint. My intention in my paintings is to be faithful to the creative process, rather than using the power of the intellect or mind. I simply allow the painting to emerge in its own way. Having said that I look for a balance and harmony within the painting, and hope it will be a beautiful expression of profound emotions and truth. www.tessagaynn.com
