My parents have a trailer in South Florida that took a beating in Hurricane Ian last year. The trailer in this painting was their neighbor. It would look like this every morning at about 7 a.m. Blazing orange as the sun blasted it from the back. I took a few pics of it and couldn't decide which one to paint. The sun had moved so fast between the shots, and I wanted to show that movement in a painting. That's what started this whole series of color cut-up paintings for me. This was the first time I ever played with time and space in one of these things. As I looked at the movement of the sun and how it changed slightly from photo to photo I just sort of painted them all. In one painting, right on top of each other. Why not? Hurricane Ian nearly wiped this trailer out but they've rebuilt it now. Better than before. Now it's this modern-looking thing. Not as retro and charming as it was but I'm sure it still lights up bright orange in the morning. But maybe not, maybe the sun doesn't like the modern ones either.

The first thing people tend to remember about me as a child is that I was always drawing. Even in elementary school I always had my sketchbook. My first love was always traditional painting. I had a book about the Old Masters I copied from when I wasn't copying Star Wars characters from magazines. I received a BFA in figure drawing and graphic design with a minor in art history from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. I worked for 15 years as an art director and graphic designer. I painted and drew in my free time. In 2000, I began freelancing to find more time to paint, and by 2004, I quit advertising to paint full-time. In addition to my studio practice, I teach painting in my Sarasota FL studio.
