"Deep Blue Mussels" was created as part of my preparatory work for series of soft pastel drawings exploring seaweed and shells within a contemporary still life composition. The exceptional quality Unison Colour Soft Pastels have been used on 25x35cm Pastelmat paper. This paper will need mounting prior to framing to prevent any pastel from touching the glass. Still life has been a constant subject throughout the history of art, with contemporary artists reinvigorating the subject. I am naturally drawn to vibrant colours and the use of complementary colours and rhythm of colour within a painting is something that repeatedly appears within my work. My inspiration for the subject of shells and seaweed in this and other drawings in the "Cornucopia" series came from my passion for nature and a desire to find the beauty in natural objects. While walking along a beach in West Wales, I came across a pile of washed up mussel shells. I began fascinated with their texture and individual colours and marks. These mussels allowed me to explore mark making and creating texture within a contemporary composition. Soft Pastels provided me with the ability to layer techniques over one another for example underpainting, staining, blending colours together, creating smooth textures and mark making on top of earlier layers.
