In this piece, there is a contrast between the base plaster texture, the resin top coat and multiple colours combining in the middle layer. The rough, textured and uneven plaster was used to create a derelict themed damaged surface whilst the array of "pretty" colours are designed to bring beauty and light to lift the work and bring it to life. The colours were smudged together to mute and soften them and to create the feel of decay and dirt rubbing together, as would be found in something old and abandoned. The surface was very fragile and it felt right to protect this "derelict" quality, almost like a restoration, by applying a clear resin as the top layer. There are areas where the raw plaster can still be seen allowing the rawness behind the surface to still reveal itself. In conclusion, the juxtaposition of everything happening in this piece gives it depth, history, life and understated beauty.
