About The Artwork

Desert. It has been attracting me for a long time. I have been deaf to its wild calling. Always felt some uncuddled longing I have been blind to its tears, closed in some cities, blocks, rooms. When I arrived, my inner child led me by the hand into mysterious caves of subconscious where I met fears, experiences of abandonment, and unwanted souvenirs. There I sat down, hugged them all and cried with happiness.

Joanna Szachowska is a true artist at heart. She started her journey at a young age and has been exploring various creative media and techniques ever since. Joanna's paintings have adorned the covers of several best-selling books, making her a renowned artist in the industry. Her paintings have appeared on the covers of a number of the world’s best-selling books, such as "Twerp" by Mark Goldblatt, "The Piano Teacher" by Elfriede Jelinek, "No Laughing Matter" by Joseph Heller, "Drinking Coffee Elsewhere" by ZZ Packer, "When I Forgot" by Elina Hirvonen, "The Family Muscat" by Isaak Singer, "April Witch" and "The Woman I never Was" by Majgull Axelsson, "A History Of God" by Karen Armstrong, and "Rose Water and Soda Bread" by Marsha Mehran, to mention just a few examples. Her style is very recognizable, with painterly backgrounds and rich textures that give her work a unique touch. Joanna is a master of mixed-media works, and her collages and assemblages are a testament to her creativity. Her works are rich in patinated and antiqued surfaces, stitches, fabric fragments, printouts combined with everyday items, and a touch of rust. Currently residing in California's Mojave Desert, Joanna draws inspiration from space and nature, creating mixed-media works that blend chaos and harmony in an expressionistic game of hide and seek. Her paintings are a reflection of her subconscious states, showing textured backgrounds, earthly colors, and the dynamics of spontaneous markings.
