About The Artwork

My paintings are psychological landscapes. I create scenes in made up worlds and insert invented human characters and animals. The viewer plays a key role in deciding what is happening in the painting. Through emotional reaction and projection of their personal experiences, the viewer develops their own understanding of the narrative. There are endless explanations for what the characters are feeling, how they are relating to each other and their surroundings, and the story behind why they are there. I use elements rooted in theatre practice such as eye contact, body language, facial expression, and scenery, to provoke inquiry and storytelling. In this current series, I have been interested in contrasting themes of absurdity, humor, and utopia with isolation, fear, and anxiety.
