About The Artwork

dialogues between memories constitute a series of paintings that started unconsciously through the memories of past and present landscapes. Laura juxtaposes, mixes, and splits layers and layers of color, which flow into the chromatic universe where the greens sign the horizon line of the montado Alentejano — Laura present landscape; or of the Laurisilva forest of Madeira Island — Laura past landscape. The montado Alentejano surrounds the dam where Laura presently lives. The Laurisilva forest is the heart of Madeira Island and the soul of Laura's memories. dialogues between memories are the second series of paintings that Laura started in 2022, with the mural painting and exhibition: conversation between memory and imagination. These paintings are a plastic and visual essay of the intersection of the physical landscape and the landscape that constantly meets in the artist's imagination and memory. «Now that I write, I think how many times, when I paint and choose the colors for the landscapes, I travel through memory and cross the Alentejo landscape that surrounds me daily and the landscapes of my past and travels.» Laura's paintings are not mere representations of landscapes. They are the pictorial materialization of the places of its co-creation, which, through a formal abstraction, makes the imaginary and the real intersect — in the same way as an end of day and the onset of night meet. I am a painter living and working in Alentejo, Portugal; and, I studied at the Arts School of Évora University. My practice as a painter is based very simply on my love for the Landscape colours and for the way the medium (enamel) and its characteristics help me in an instinctive act of painting in representing this Landscapes that evolve where I live or the natural places where I’ve been. In the paintings, I am searching to accomplish the colours and the movements of the skies and grounds, searching for the essence of the Landscape itself, letting the chance, the hazard and the accidents of the relation between the medium and the surface of the support to work in favour of the resultant object: an “Abstract Landscape” Painting. Which, I hope, it exhibits something singular and unique, where in each painting, each observer can imagine a different Landscape of its own. My paintings can be seen abstract because I maintain the focus on the characteristics of the medium and the surfaces of the support. Being inclined for the colour field and action painting movements. Therefore, I see it has “Abstract Landscapes”, exhibiting something singular and unique in each painting. These Landscapes are timeless and mindful. The motivation behind the painting is the admiration for the natural world. I’m fascinated with how the colours relate in nature and transform the Landscapes, therefore I work with these colours, its’ abstraction and movements. My paintings recall memories of Landscapes, both for the interpretation of the reality that surrounds me and for the nostalgia with which I recall the natural places where I’ve been. In this way, I intend to convey the importance of living with the environment in which I find myself. Having the horizon line as the beginning of the whole artistic process; the colours of the sky, the relief, the texture of the landscape and the way these elements relate and change throughout the day are all aspects lived and recognizable in my paintings.
