About The Artwork

My inspirations come from many sources. I was blown away by a show by Mickalene Thomas. Her portraits of strong black women adorned with rhinestones and painted wallpaper that spoke to the 1970s hit me like a ton of bricks. Her living room did as well. Vibrant colors are dulled with age as they weave through each other. When my husband saw it, he said it looked like crayons. A title was born. I create my works by building layers of glue mixed with acrylic over a period of time. Each layer takes 1-2 days to dry. This one was created with two pans simultaneously, then cut and glued together. As I wove them, some of the pieces came apart leaving small holes. I usually repair this but felt it gave an aged look to the piece. They stayed. The glow in the dark effect allows the work to have a checkered look as the present remains and the past fades. The photo does make the effect brighter than in life.
