ERI 5 "Stiff Upper Lip" Painting

Anyone who grows up in the UK hears this phrase at some point in their early life. I have tried stiffening my upper lip: it does absolutely nothing except make you look like a carp. And my upper lip is never in danger of going wobbly anyway. No- it refers to an intangible trait that the British have tried over centuries to foster: unruffled coolness and optimism in the face of even the most dire challenges. "Poker face" to you and me. At best, the stiff upper lip papers over the cracks of a mostly well-maintained society. At worst it projects confidence where there is none, and assures people that everything's fine when it's not.
