Derived from the Greek word ekdusis, which means to “put off”, ‘Ecdysis’ describes the process of shedding an old skin in order for an organism to grow. Part of a three-panel series, this work is a personal reflection on the internal conflicts surrounding intimacy and vulnerability in the aftermath of sexual violence, and considers a metaphorical “shedding of old skin” in order to grow and heal from such trauma. The base surface of the painting is a wood panel, cradled with 4cm deep sides. The sculptural "fabric" like element of the painting is canvas, that was arranged before it was primed; so it is stiff and holds it's shape. The canvas is attached with staples, which are not visible from the front, and are sealed on the backside of the wood panel. The exposed, flat wood panel section of the painting is coated in epoxy resin, and the sides of the panel are left natural. Hanging hardware (D-rings attached to back of wood panel) included.

Fiona Macpherson is an artist practicing on Gadigal land. Working primarily with oils, Fiona’s painting practice explores the nonlinear nature of healing while engaging with an autobiographical narrative of trauma. Motivated by impactful personal experiences, her work is focused on the social and psychological implications of sexual abuse, and the internal conflicts surrounding intimacy and vulnerability in the aftermath of sexual violence. Through vibrant and densely layered paintings, her work seeks to dissect and examine contrasting themes of silence and visibility, surface and underside, cognitive dissonance, tenderness, and rage. She lives and works in Sydney, NSW, and has recently completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW Art & Design in 2022. She will be undertaking an international residency at Arteles Creative Centre in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, in January 2023.
