About The Artwork

Part of the Passing Through Series a group of paintings based on 200 sketches made whilst travelling through the land from North Devon to the Cornish Coast; mapping the nature of things. The brain and the eye struggle to keep up with the hand and the land as they move in opposite directions. Gaps emerge and shapes fold in on one another. It is in the gaps - between one state - one place - and another that something else happens. In these paintings time is in two modes; mappings of the nature of things and the memory of things. In the time and space between sketching on the road and painting in the studio something happens; the feeling of a place comes to dominate and the gap between sketching and painting allows the subconscious in. Accumulated fragments begin to inhabit a borderland between figuration and abstraction. Landscapes of a sort, these topologies of place develop in the time-lapse, between the experience and the process of painting. They are subjective evocations of the language of land and the traces left behind. In this one the road hugs the very edge of the land, passing abandoned tin mines, a disgarded caravan and farmers cottages.
