The visual arts, particularly contemporary art, occupy a similar cultural space to divination: the translation or interpretation of meaning through sometimes random visual cues: the debate about and denial of meaning: recognition of pre-learned visual codes. In my work I use traditional still life painting methods in oils, but, in contrast to much still life painting, my work describes my actual un-composed world of kitchen scraps and lunch boxes. I believe in the validity of domestic experiences. These images combine my domestic world, represented by the kitchen sink, with objects which have been used throughout history for divination - eggshells, bones, tea leaves and giblets. The desire to transcend mortality is a challenge for everyone, but for those whose work is traditionally unpaid, menial, boring and repetitive the challenge is to keep going with no hope of benefit or reward.
