This work was inspired by the warm evening light that softened the urban landscape. The sky has a smooth gradation but the foreground buildings are depicted as flat hard-edged geometric shapes. I used a limited palette of red-oranges and purples to describe the fading light and unify the whole composition.

I like to take architectural subjects enveloped by sunlight and through the visual medium of paint try to say something of the euphoria I feel on these days. Buildings in themselves are interesting subjects very often multi-levelled reaching high into the sky they can add an impressive dynamism to compositions. I live and work in Harlow Town in Essex (UK) which also happens to be the subject of my paintings. When faced with the decision of how to depict the town I nearly always choose to be optimistic in my approach. This gives me the opportunity to use a high-key palette which helps me achieve the bright and sunny effect that I’m aiming for in each painting. The medium I prefer to work in for this particular subject is Acrylic paint as it’s ideal for creating the flat, hard-edged colours which complement this style of so painting beautifully.
