About The Artwork

Watching “Only God Forgives” directed by Nicolas Winding Refn gave me the initial inspiration for this work. In one scene of this macabre, highly stylised and flawed film, we see a man sitting at the kitchen table, wearing a mask and looking at the camera, waiting. He is here to murder the family living in this house. The idea of a cosy domestic setting suddenly invaded by menace and the angle of the camera (looking at the scene from outside the room like a voyeur) inspired the initial composition for this painting. The idea behind the work was completed when I thought about a friend who once told me he dreaded reading the news, and stayed away from specific newspapers, as he could not cope with the sad tales of everyday domestic tragedy they contained. I pictured him weeping quietly at the breakfast table a newspaper in his hands. This gentle man has a complex mental illness and I felt that his fears were also caused by the nagging worry that one day his condition, which he cannot always control, might turn him into the perpetrator of one of these incidents.
