Jung's theory on the collective unconscious was that it is made up of a collection of knowledge and imagery that every person is born with and is shared by all human beings due to ancestral experience. Although individuals do not know what thoughts and images are in their collective unconscious, it is thought that in moments of crisis the psyche can tap into the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious is common to all human beings and is responsible for a number of deep-seated beliefs and instincts, such as spirituality, sexual behaviour, and life and death instincts. According to Jung, these blueprints are influenced strongly by our parents, relatives, major events (births, deaths, etc.), nature and our cultures. Jung felt that people are born with a blueprint already in them that will determine the course of their lives, something which, while controversial at the time, is fairly widely supported to today owing to the amount of evidence there is in the animal kingdom for various species being born with a repertoire of behaviours uniquely adapted to their environments. It has been observed that these behaviours in animals are activated by environmental stimuli in the same manner that Jung felt human behaviours are brought to the fore. The human mind has innate characteristics “imprinted” on it as a result of evolution. These universal predispositions stem from our ancestral past. Fear of the dark, or of snakes and spiders might be examples, and it is interesting that this idea has recently been revived in the theory of prepared conditioning. It did not mean that people inherited ideas but rather an inherited mode of functioning like how chicks emerge from eggs, how birds build nests or how a wasp stings the motor ganglion of the caterpillar. In other words, it is a ‘pattern of behaviour’. While Jung studied psychology, scientific research has shown that the human capacity to store and transmit culture arose from genetically evolved psychological mechanisms. This implies that at some point during the evolution of the human species a type of social learning leading to cumulative cultural evolution was evolutionarily advantageous. Humans have mentally and physically evolved over centuries as we changed through cultural evolution. Let’s play a game. If you hold your arm out, and touch your thumb to your pinky, you'll probably see a raised tendon in the middle of your wrist. Right? If you don't have that, lucky you - you're among the 10-15 percent of humans on Earth who were born without this prominent feature in one or both of their arms. This tendon connects to the palmaris longus, a muscle that most of us have, but there seems to be no real reason for it being there. Research has found that the presence of this muscle in our forearms does not give us any more discernible arm or grip strength than people born without the muscle. In fact, it's so inconsequential, surgeons often remove it and use it for reconstructive or plastic surgery procedures elsewhere on the body. So why did we end up with such a useless piece of tissue? Scientists have found that, while palmaris longus is present in many species of mammals today, it's most developed in those that use their forearms to move around - such as lemurs and monkeys.
