My studio overlooks Dublin Bay. On one side there’s hills and forest and on the other there is the sea, so I’m constantly inspired by nature! Every day looks different and the landscape changes so dramatically through the seasons.
I was brought up in the countryside of Co. Donegal and I have fantastic memories of growing up there and the summers spent at the seaside. When I think of a beach or sea scene my mind automatically pictures the beach there. So when I paint seascapes, I have a happy mix of nostalgia from my childhood and an appreciation for my current surroundings.

Although it sounds obvious, the way I paint is very hands on. I lay the piece flat and move around it as I work. Paintings aren’t just viewed from one angle, so I build up layers upon layers of resin and paint, some parts of each layer are clear and transparent so the finished painting ends up almost sculptural. The viewer can see deep into the painting through the different layers.

On a surface level, I want the viewer to feel as though they are moving through the landscape of the painting, and for them to become immersed in the layers of the painting. What I would really like to achieve from my paintings is to encourage the viewer consider their own surroundings and essentially to reconnect with their own environment just as I have.

Jenny mc Connell was born and raised in the Irish countryside of County Donegal. Jenny made the move to Belfast after finishing school to complete a degree in fine & applied art at the University of Ulster. After graduating in 2012 she moved to Dublin to continue her art practice, where she lived and worked until 2014 when she emigrated to Australia for one year. It was not until Jenny’s time in Australia that she began to fully appreciate and value the rugged beauty of her native landscape. This realisation has greatly influenced her transition from her earlier figurative work into abstract landscapism. Jenny has exhibited on a number of occasions since graduating, notably in the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Ulster Academy, and also the Glebe Gallery’s open exhibition, where one of her pieces won the Glebe Gallery prize. She works with resin, ink, paint - and her work is characterised by great movement and depth. Jenny wants her audience to feel as if they are moving through the landscape as they view her work. "Since I have returned to Ireland, I feel very fortunate to live and work overlooking the Irish Sea. I draw inspiration from the colours, the textures and the forms of the landscape that surrounds me. I love to experiment with many different techniques and use various materials to achieve the effect I’m pursuing on that particular day."
