FRIENSHIP Painting

This is a symbolic oil painting. A tonal composition was created using the methods of the Old Masters -thin layers of glaze working from darkness towards light. In the lower edge and around the monkey, I mixed fine sand with paint to create a texture. I felt inspired by a photograph of the White Pagoda -built in 1816 by Prince Bagyidaw in memory of his wife, Princess Hsinbyme. The photographer gave me permission to use his image. Halfway through its drawing, I had a long break from my studio following the loss of my father. When I returned, my mind was in a different place, and I was not able to complete the painting as I had originally visualised. That is how this painting's narrative changed, acquiring symbolic meaning. The Monk on the right is holding a handbook on 'Wisdom and Being a Good Human Being'. The monk on the left side is holding the clock that portraits the emotional baggage we haul, and the time needed to cultivate and nurture friendship. A monkey, resting on the sand of life, represents the part of us with the power to jeopardise even magical relationships. The shrines represent our life experiences -good and bad. The cracks in the building are symbols of relationships that survive the hardship that life throws at us, and the physical and emotional cracks that our bodies suffer in our lifetime. The many layers of paint allude to the memories built and shared with our long-term friends. l would like this painting to transmit to its viewers hope, courage and joy.
