During a period of 4-5 years, I was occupied with a body of work named “Spectacle”, dealing with the society of spectacle in complex relations with what we may call art world. A starting point for that research was, of course, a famous 1967 work of philosophy by Guy Debord, in which the author develops and presents the concept of the Spectacle. It was my task to acknowledge the way in which we consume culture nowdays, and make it even more visible, emphasising the rising selfie-phenomena and interaction with artifacts of culture through the mediation of a smartphone display. The painting above belongs to a new series named “Fake news”. This time, I wanted to abandon art world related mise-en-scene, and focus on media world, propaganda and virtual worlds constructed by media agencies. My intention was not to tell a direct story, to support or dismantle an agenda, but to make visible how this storytelling of media world works. It is my duty to preserve a neutral standpoint at all times, and always point to importance of critical thinking. Jacques Derrida once wrote there is a near infinite number of ways for interpreting any situation or text. This is a matter of language and it’s interpretation. On the other hand, propaganda tends to present one view or idea as absolute truth. The term of “fake news” itself was borrowed from the media world. And since it was popularised during the Donald Trump presidential campaign, was there any better way to start this body of work, than using a painting full of baby Trump protest-baloons?
