Fanny Seated On a Chair Painting

An effortless, natural seated pose by model, Fanny, which had a great rhythm moving through the body and a fantastic gaze to match. It is done with a mixture of black gouache and colured acrylics on brown, textured craft paper (the reverse side of the paper is smooth). The black was used for the first pass and then I worked over the top, choosing to focus on her face/bust, drawing attention to these areas using the coloured acrylic for the fleshy red tones and highlights of the skin. The pose was 20 minutes, and I am fan of paintings or drawings that have areas more complete than others - here, I kept the loose line work of the body untouched to help direct the eye to the more detailed area of the face. I had done a few sessions working in this manner and I really felt with this one I got the mix of black line to coloured tone just right. It was done at the Wednesday evening Life Drawing sessions held at Illumination Mac Guff, Paris, where I worked as a Character Animator for over three and a half years. The studio is known for such films as Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and The Lorax. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. This is possibly my favourite piece from my time in Paris.
