About The Artwork

In terms of content this work was inspired by the Haitian Revolution and by the African spiritual practice of Vodun. It also results from my efforts to create an aesthetic language and form directly informed by ancestral African creative practice and is expressive of the experiences of Black people in the 'New World'. Therefore the many nails in the piece is a reference to the spiritual principle in Vodun called Ogun. This is a masculine entity (deity) associated with, among other things, war and military science. It is also a re-imagining of the Nkisi nail figures from the Congo. The work in hung by tacking or stapling the top only to a wooden panel as the action of gravity is also an aesthetic consideration in the work.
