About The Artwork

This is an abstract painting on un-primed (raw) canvas in acrylic with indelible marker (Sharpie), paint marker, and collage. The painting was wrapped around heavy duty gallery depth (1.5”) stretcher bars after it had dried, such that elements of the composition wrap around the sides of the final piece (see detail image). There is a vortex of activity in this piece, with an underlying composition of delicate gradients in pink, yellow, and blue created by applying low viscosity (high flow) acrylic paint to canvas that has been soaked in water. The water pulls the paints into the fibers of the canvas, resulting in a dyed effect. On top of this I have poured, dripped, and smeared various acrylic paints. I have doodled with Sharpie markers and Krink K-60 paint markers, and I have applied collaged elements including cartoon doodles on post-it notes, industrial serial number tag mis-prints, and graphics from promotional materials from Yupo, maker of the textured polypropylene I use in other work. There is a chaos in this piece like two worlds colliding. I’ve appropriated the serial number tags from my work as a robotics engineer and the precision of numbers represented in 2D barcodes, the fine lines in the doodles, and the highly produced commercial imagery in the promotional material are in contrast with the overall composition's melting vortex of primal energy.
