I've always admired the beautiful forms fencers make and the stoic aura that they possess. In my mind fencing and painting are linked. John Singer Sargent was often compared to a fencer when he painted Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose--the way he would step back with his brush in hand to look at the scene and changing light, and then decisively dart forward to stab at the painting. Many great painters must have much in common with fencers.
