About The Artwork

This work with its partner, 'Figures in the Landscape II', developed from the desire to limit the use of colour in my palette. In this one it is only using Red, Yellow in colour blocks. The background is in Paynes Grey, to provide a softer dark (blueish). I find this work intriguing, there are definitely figures there, although they were not deliberate, they have emerged - I wonder who they are? Its interesting how one's mood or thought processes translate to the hand. Maybe I had been with a lot of people and this was a result, I can't remember. This and the other three in this collection are all framed under glass with white mount and frames.

Although I am a West Country artist, living in North Devon now, I was born in Pershore, Worcs. My family moved to North Devon shortly afterwards. When I retired from full time work, at a local college, I decided that, having painted for so many years, on a self-taught basis, I should formalise my education. My choice was BA Fine Arts, and after three years study, I graduated with a Grayson Perry. Colour is my passion. I usually try to portray what I see around me, in the landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes, of this beautiful part of this country.   Living in Devon, I am lucky that I only have to walk a mile or so to get to water.  I am drawn to the abstractions in nature and these play a large part in my work, sometimes without my being conscious of their presence until nearing completion of the piece. My image making is often formed from memory and emotion rather than direct observation and I enjoy the process of allowing and enabling material to flow and develop dynamically. Further stages will include form produced from images created by the spontaneous action of the media.
