About The Artwork

This work began as an exercise in employing a "schematic" or wireframe approach to representing a scenic composition, with the intention of integrating freeform / asemic calligraphic elements and calligraphy-like brush strokes. Overall, the composition hints at a view of a body of water set against a sky and horizon. The composition is replete with both symmetries and contrasts / opposites. On the one hand, the sky is represented with a series of spaced vertical orange lines, apparently raining down from above, between which are lines of intuitively produced calligraphic forms. In contrast to these rigid vertical lines in the sky is the perspective lines of the ocean. While there appears to be symmetry about the horizontal axis, the differences between the sky and the water form a kind of quasi- or conceptual symmetry, but not an exact symmetry. Similarly, the "fire in the water" mirrors the "fire in the sky", with the fire in the water appearing to emanate from below the depths, while the fire in the sky appears to emanate from the distant horizon. In keeping with the objective of incorporating calligraphic brush strokes and gestures in the work, the representation of the fire in the sky comprises a multitude brush stroke "wiggles", a technique seen in multiple of my works and which could be considered somewhat of a style signature. Above the horizon, apparent rays of light subtly radiate from out the left and right sides, framing the focal area of the fire on the horizon under symbolic arches, and these rays serve further to approximately mirror the diagonal perspective lines in the water, thereby strengthening the non-literal compositional symmetry (symmetry in elements) between the water and the sky. Finally, the top center of the work is embellished with an eye or jewel, serving as another echo of the fire in the water and serving as a visual anchor for the rays that radiate from the left and right sides to form the "arches".
