This painting is of a remote part of Northern Scotland. It is wild and beautiful, and largely uninhabited. It is the site of the notorious Highland Clearances, when crofters were forcibly removed from their homes by Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland. She hoped to make more money from sheep farming than the income from the rents of the crofters.
