About The Artwork
Float is inspired by the beauty of the caribbean jungle. The beautiful yet foreboding rivers that are engulfed by the dense trees and plants are a sight that has been planted in my mind since visiting the caribbean. I was especially interested in capturing the fragility of a person floating down the river on a rubber ring. The person can be seen glaring in to the foliage which is flooded with light. The light is not necessarily natural, however it could represent an opening for interpretation. I have been inspired by paintings from Peter Doig, Daniel Richter, Michael Armitage and Henri Rousseau. Along with this inspiration, I have used sketches and old photographs to set the scene. This information has been translated to canvas with the use of Oil paint.

Through the process of painting with oils on canvas, Jacob Lucas creates vibrant and otherworldly landscapes that appear both playful and expressive. By using collage, water colour and pencil as a starting point for his landscapes, surprising juxtapositions of plants, trees, animals and other structures are pieced together allowing Lucas to construct his own landscape experiences through the process of painting. Lucas also plays with ideas of seduction and paranoia within his landscapes. By using dreams and nostalgic memories, as well as inspiration taken from both traditional and contemporary landscape paintings, his paintings can appear artificial and alien in that features of the natural world are transformed and applied in strange and unfamiliar territories.
