ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My practice demonstrates an interest in the moment of translation from film imagery into painting. Through a time-based process, I rework film loops, known as GIFS, from my travels within Canada. As I watch the GIF repeat, I reimagine and reconstruct the image through layers of brushstrokes. By doing so, I engage with the experience of repetitive thought, and how it is a reaction to dealing with memories and anxiety. The process to capture movement with a slow medium like paint is an anxious act, and the repeated gesture creates a final image that is recognizable but obstructed somehow, much like interrupted thought. After many layers through this process of overlapping motion, the final piece reflects a calm, mystical picture that emphasizes the ephemeral.

Tamara Thompson is a recent Drawing and Painting graduate from OCAD university, based in Toronto Ontario. Her practice demonstrates an interest in the moment of translation from film imagery into painting.Through a time-based process, she reworks film sources that engage ideas of horror and the experience of anxiety into a painting schematic. More specifically, Tamara uses GIFS of people experiencing extreme emotion from film references like the The Walking Dead, in order to concentrate on a moment of crisis.The landscapes displayed in the GIFS provide an ungoverned space for the crisis to occur and thus facilitate a mediated reaction between horror and meditation. In an attempt to mimic the movement of the jittering, anxious figures, gestures are slowed down, fragmented and yet monumentalized. As a result, a conversation between realism and abstraction as well as anxiety and calm reflection transpires.
