What it feels like to be outside… sun on your face, wind on your cheeks, the sound of leaves underfoot, birdsong in the air… and the myriad effects of light and color on the land- scape… a breath of fresh air.

I love the outdoors and am fascinated with the natural world. This painting is part of a series inspired by the strength of nature and the power of the outdoors.

I started by working on watercolor paper with ink, watercolor, pastel and graphite. I then tore the paper into smaller sections and collaged them onto wood panels. I then continued working on top of that and added acrylic paint to the mix. I coated the finished pieces with clear acrylic gel medium, so the paintings are ready to hang when you receive them.

This is an original mixed media painting, signed on the front and hand labeled on the back by the artist. It features a range of materials: paper collage, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, ink, and graphite on a hardwood panel. The panel is made of basswood and is braced with a basswood cradle. This type of painting support has been valued since the 14th century for its strength and smooth surface.

The sides are painted white and it is 1.5 inch thick. It comes ready to hang with a sawtooth hanger.

It’s through making things and being in the outdoors that I am able to connect to the world and to find my place in it. In the outdoors, we are reminded of how small we are in the world. We experience the vastness of the universe and at the same time, the interconnectedness of it all. My paintings are abstract with references to the landscape. I am inspired by the poetry of nature: color and light in the landscape, seasons, and the passing of time. All of our senses are awakened when we spend time outside. The rhythm of steps while hiking, the whir and clicks on a bike ride, the changing shapes of light and shadow between trees, the sound of birdsong—the memory of all these impacts on my senses feeds into my process of abstraction. I love to explore my experiences in nature through the formal elements of color, shape, line and composition. I ultimately hope that through my artwork I can inspire people to return to the outdoors and build meaningful connections with others there.
