About The Artwork

Fred Williams is one of my favourite non-indigenous Australian abstract artists of the past 100 years. Australia suffered a severe bushfire season immediately prior to the the Covid19 pandemic, and the pandemic restrictions encouraged me to re-investigate Fred Williams tree studies. This painting views Australia's devastated trees through a visor-like window, recalling Sidney Nolan's iconic Ned Kelly series. Australia had a love- affair with fossil fuels and speed - a blinkered, doomed relationship symbolised by the restricted view through Kelly's metal visor and the backdrop of Fred Williams-like tree shapes. The tree shapes are also influenced by indigenous art.
