About The Artwork

This painting finds its natural protagonist in the seagull, a symbol of freedom since ancient times. Seagulls fly over the oceans, covering long distances even at very high altitudes; they make truly epic journeys, following the currents of the winds, in search of places favorable to them. Skilled predators, they are independent and self-sufficient, both at sea and on land. Their impulse towards the sun and the light, hints at the courage of freedom and spiritual elevation. Their autonomy of movement and self-sufficiency evoke the freedom to choose one's ideal destination and to decide on one's own life, breaking the barriers imposed by society to explore new horizons. This painting depicts in the foreground two large seagulls stylized with scratchy chalk strokes, soaring majestically, wings outstretched, over the rippling, seething sea. The expanse of water stretches as far as the eye can see, encroaching into the sky in the distance. The view fails to embrace it in its immensity and struggles to distinguish it from the sky, leading the eye past the boundary of the canvas. It is the two flocks of white gulls in the background, gliding in the wake of the currents that give substance to the infinitude of the two natural elements, air and water. At the same time, with their elegant, gliding and long flight they also head towards an unexplored beyond and the imagination runs beyond the visible, overcomes the white, luminous frame of the painting and sweeps into the invisible infinite: it is the expression of every man's irrepressible yearning for freedom. My love for art began the very moment my memories originated. Even as a child, I liked to express myself with drawing and colours. I spent hours and hours tinkering with coloured pencils, crayons and felt-tip pens. I did my first painting when I was still a young girl, at the age of sixteen: a naïfs-style painting depicting a country landscape with rural buildings, completely shrouded in snow. I loved to go to the library and browse through art history books and exhibition catalogues to learn about famous painters and their works. Then I took to frequenting museums and any place rich in paintings and statues, such as ancient noble palaces and churches, of which my country, Italy, is so generous. As I studied the styles of the different historical periods and the characteristics of individual artists, I searched for my own identity. Those were the years of adolescence, then of the search for my own personal stylistic signature. Work in the art world has marked my entire career: I have designed fittings and set designs for haute couture brands and later devoted myself to garment design. In the meantime, I got married and had my daughter Nicole. I love animals; my dog Perla is my inseparable companion. I started painting again some years ago, after my experience as a stylist ended and my daughter grew up. The creative impulse I have in me is irrepressible and has driven me to pick up my paintbrush and palette again. When I paint, the melting pot of thoughts, feelings, emotions that I have in my soul takes shape day after day, idea after idea, brushstroke after brushstroke. All the immaterial inside me comes out and becomes material in the finished work: it is like magic.
